Willow: the next step in quantum computing
Error correction remains central to building a useful quantum computer.
Google introduced its Willow quantum processor and reported progress in reducing errors as the system scales.
Quantum computation is particularly sensitive to errors. Reducing error rates while increasing scale is therefore an important research challenge.
Results on specialised benchmarks do not automatically translate into everyday computing advantages. This is progress in the technology, rather than a universal replacement for conventional computers.
